A good Design starts with a good design brief. It outlines the way in which the product will develop.
What exactly is a Design brief?
A design brief is your vision written down in few sentences.
This is one of the most important phases of a product design done even before the
design process starts. It tells where you want your product to be. Understand
its context for existence.
Here are few things to remember when writing a design brief
Define the ultimate Goal your product will achieve
First of all, think about the problem your product will
solve. This helps you get a direction to begin with. Being clear about this
will help avoid any confusion down the line.
Define the end users
Identify the users who will be benefited by your design. The
design brief should have the end users at the center. What are their needs? Why aren’t
they achieved with the current designs?
Try solving less problems
Having less problems makes the design simple for the user to
understand. Pick one or two problems and trying solving them. Adding more and
more features makes the design complex and difficult for the end users to
understand and use.
Say what and why, but not how
Your brief shouldn’t tell how the problem will be solved or how the product will look, this limits your creative thinking at the start of the process itself and constrains the outcome. Be open to different possibilities which will come when you progress with the Design Process.
“A good brief should say what the solution
needs to do, but not how it needs to do it”
Keep it short and concise
It should be specific. This help in prioritizing the problem
and the users. It should contain enough information to define your vision and
is open for interpretation but not so narrow that it constrains the further
development.
Write in simple language
It should be easy to understand. Adding complex words won’t help. Memorize it, it will help you in making decisions in the further stages of Design process.
